Energy objects: Reflection through interaction

Abstract

Energy consumption and personal objects both play
important roles in young people’s everyday life and
influence their behaviour in many different ways,
although often unconsciously. This article investigates
how interaction design and speculative re-design of
personal objects can be used as a means for raising
young people’s awareness of energy consumption.
The concept of energy objects acts to make energy
visible and tangible in order to stimulate reflection
and reaction through the interaction with a collection
of conceptual design proposals. Initial user feedback
indicates that the presented collection of re-designed
objects can be seen as an adequate tool in order to
achieve reflection through interaction.
